Griffin: IRS "Targeting' Underscores the Need for Tax Reform

Statement

Date: May 17, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Tim Griffin (AR-02), a member of the Ways and Means Committee, issued the following statement after today's hearing on the Internal Revenue Service's (IRS) targeting of conservative groups:

"Today's hearing demonstrates how our most expansive federal powers have been given to our most intrusive agency. A constituent texted me last night, relaying how the IRS has harassed his family with inappropriate questions. The Treasury Department's audit report that was published this week is just the tip of the iceberg, but already, we know that several Democratic senators demanded the IRS target a number of conservative groups. Further, the IRS division commissioner who oversaw this outrage received bonuses and a promotion. Where is the accountability? And unfortunately, she's now leading the IRS's effort to implement ObamaCare. All of this underscores why we need a simpler, flatter, and fairer tax code that protects taxpayers and reduces the reach of the IRS."
